How to Get a Better Jawline
A sharper jawline is mostly the product of low body fat, good posture, and muscle tone — all trainable. Here's what actually works, ranked by impact, plus what to realistically expect.
1. Body fat percentage: the biggest lever
Most people already have a defined jawbone; it's hidden under subcutaneous fat. Dropping body fat is the single most effective "jawline exercise" there is. Men typically see clear jaw definition around 12-15% body fat, women around 20-24%. The method is unglamorous but proven: a moderate calorie deficit (300-500 kcal/day), high protein, and resistance training 3-4 times per week. Aggressive crash diets backfire — you lose facial volume in the wrong places and look tired rather than chiseled.
2. Posture: the instant improvement
Forward head posture — the default for anyone who stares at a phone or laptop — pushes your chin back and bunches the tissue under your jaw, creating the appearance of a double chin even in lean people. Fixing it is free and shows results immediately in photos:
- Chin tucks: gently draw your head straight back (like making a double chin), hold 5 seconds, repeat 10-15 times daily.
- Wall angels and rows to strengthen the upper back so upright posture is effortless.
- Hold your phone at eye level instead of dropping your head to it.
3. Chewing and mastic gum
The masseter muscles at the angle of your jaw respond to resistance training like any other muscle. Chewing hard, sugar-free gum (mastic gum is the community favorite because it's significantly tougher than regular gum) for 20-60 minutes a few times a week can add modest masseter size, widening the lower jaw slightly. Caveats: start slow to avoid jaw joint (TMJ) irritation, chew on both sides evenly, and stop if you feel pain or clicking. More masseter is not always more attractive — overdevelopment can make a face look blocky, especially for women.
4. Facial exercises and tongue posture
Evidence for facial exercises is thin, but a few habits are harmless and plausibly useful: proper tongue posture on the roof of the mouth (covered in depth in our mewing guide), neck curls with a light plate or towel resistance, and avoiding chronic mouth breathing. These work best as complements to leanness and posture, not replacements.
5. Skincare and definition
Skin quality changes how defined your jawline reads. Puffiness from high sodium, alcohol, and poor sleep blurs jaw angles; consistent hydration, 7-9 hours of sleep, and going easy on salt before events sharpen things within days. A simple routine — cleanser, moisturizer, SPF — keeps skin firm and clear; see our skincare routine guide. Some people also use facial massage or gua sha to reduce fluid retention; effects are temporary but real for photos and events.
Realistic expectations
Timeline: posture improvements show in days, de-puffing in a week, body-fat changes in 2-6 months, and masseter growth in 3-6 months. Bone structure won't change without surgery, but most people are nowhere near their soft-tissue ceiling.
